Why did composers keep their composition mcripts?

what comes to mind for me is beethoven, theres all the mcript paper of his symphonies and sonatas and everything, the origonal hand-written stuff he did. but why ddi he keep them, or did someone else keep them? was there a point since he wouldve had the printed copy, or did he probably not receive a formally printed copy since times were different than they are now?
