How religious is this guy, and should I pursue a relationship with him?

We're both teens. He went to a Catholic middle school, so he's converted to Catholicism, though his parents aren't religious. He's attends church every Sunday. One of his friends, an immigrant to the US, is strongly attracted to him and makes it really obvious, but has not come out of the closet, so to speak. My crush is obviously bothered by it, but he hasn't made phobic remarks. A while ago, I asked if he was open to the idea of seeing The Golden Comp, which supposedly presents anti-religion views. He said he was, except he wouldn't necessarily agree with the ideas. I'm agnostic, and I'm open to religion, but I have made some huge mistakes (read: ) in my life. We're good friends right now. Should I make an attempt to start a relationship with him?
