How did Mr Mandelbrot improve your life?
What sad news! Eons ago when I was processing the data for my Masters, I'd get huge printouts that included long columns of Mandelbrot and Fourier Transformations... which I hated because it took me hours to squeeze meaning out of them. When graphical fractals were first made public I was enthralled with them. I went right out and got software that would generate them. Unfortunately, back in those DOS-only days, there was no such thing as "make your choice and click on it". I had to manually type in all the numerical settings...but I persevered and generated the most beautiful images. I know all the mathematical uses for fractals and I appreciate them but there's something about the regular, prescribed relationships of illustrated fractals that I still think is magical....and there's so little magic in our lives lately.
